LAKE ALMANOR AREA, Calif. — October 31, 2026. As mountain weather turns toward winter, residents and visitors should distinguish a road marked “open” on an old county webpage from a road that is safe and accessible today.
Plumas County maintains a Winter Road Closures page listing county roads, seasonal access descriptions and which routes do not receive snow removal. Its posted table includes several roads of interest to the Lake Almanor basin, such as Prattville–Butt Reservoir Road (CR305), Seneca Road (CR306), Humbug Road (CR307) and Old Red Bluff Road (CR311). For some of these roads the table explicitly says snow is not removed.
An important warning about the list
The county’s webpage states that it was last updated March 24, 2026. That means the table cannot be used on October 31 as real-time confirmation of present road conditions. Snow, washouts, construction or other hazards may cause restrictions without notice.
Where to check before departure
For state highways, the county points travelers to Caltrans QuickMap and California road information at 1-800-427-7623. For county roads, residents can consult Plumas County Public Works. The district serving Chester and Lake Almanor is listed at 1033 Main Street, Chester, with office number (530) 403-4193.
Do not rely on a navigation app alone for unplowed rural routes. Check forecasts, have winter equipment suitable for conditions, and tell someone your intended route if traveling into areas with limited service. This article does not claim any particular road is currently open, closed or snow-covered.
